Tarious designs had been submitted for the replacement of the dilapidated Gothic town hall. The Peace of Münster in 1648 brought such euphoria that the most ambitious plan was carried out. This was in the middle of what was later called the Golden Age. The town hall was built on a scale never before seen in Europe. It became the largest non-religious building of the ancient world. The building can therefore be seen as an important symbol of liberal Amsterdam. The “eighth wonder of the world” became the jewel in Amsterdam's crown. The building had to reflect the wealth and prestige of the city of Amsterdam. The construction cost 8.5 million guilders, a huge amount at the time. The palace is used by the Royal House and is a landmark for the city of Amsterdam.
